Inside Raven, Women in STEM

Finding Her Passion and Growing Her Purpose

Engineering Technician Dorinda Maddy has been solving challenges at Raven since 2017.

Solving challenges has always come naturally to Engineering Technician Dorinda Maddy. For her, finding solutions and new ways of doing things is a way to continuously learn and grow. As a member of the Raven team for the last six years, Dorinda has worked in a variety of roles that have given her opportunities to develop her passion for learning and simplifying procedures.

Dorinda left her career as a substitute teacher to join Raven’s Manufacturing Operations team as an assembler on the cable line. After a year, she transitioned to a role as an inventory handler, where she worked with a group of team members to simplify processes by changing the warehousing of products. The changes the group implemented are still in use today, and they ensure a smoother system for team members.

While on the inventory team, Dorinda learned new skills using Microsoft Excel and expanded her abilities with the application. She said it was a time of learning that allowed her to find new ways of organizing information to make it simple to understand, resulting in higher efficiency and less stress for the team, and the knowledge she gained is essential for the work she does today.

Dorinda transitioned from an inventory team member to a Team Lead, then later moved into her current role as an Engineering Technician. The range of roles that Dorinda has been in over the years has given her a variety of opportunities to advance her skills and learn different sides of the organization, and she said that this abundance of knowledge has been key to finding her passion.

Dorinda’s work is impactful for all members of the team, delivering results outside her own personal growth. Manufacturing Engineering Supervisor Erik Nelson said that Dorinda is an asset and helps enable delivery of our products to customers in a timely manner. He said that her work helps ensure that the team’s inputs are accurate as a product moves through the change order process, resulting in correct programs and documentation as well as success for the team and customer.

Dorinda’s attention to detail really helps us all by making sure that we have everything ready for the production floor, and she ensures that manufacturing has everything they need to be successful.

For Dorinda, working at Raven has been an opportunity for her to show her children what being a woman in STEM looks like. She has four daughters and three sons, and the skills she’s gained in her roles over the years have allowed her to be an example to her kids of what a career path can look like, no matter what they’re interested in doing.

Working at Raven has helped me, and it’s helping my children. My daughters all want a technical degree or STEM career of some kind, and they don’t fear any job. They don’t think of jobs as ‘a boy’s job’ or ‘a girl’s job’ because they know they can do anything.

— Dorinda Maddy, Engineering Technician

Dorinda wants her kids and any girls interested in a STEM career to know that there is no exact way to find your passion or any timeline you must follow to get there. Dorinda started at Raven when she was 37, and the work she’s done since then has allowed her to discover what work she’s passionate about.

No knowledge is useless. I’ve used the knowledge that I’ve gained here at Raven in other aspects of my life, and I’ve always enjoyed that continuous learning.

— Dorinda Maddy, Engineering Technician

Dorinda encourages any girls interested in a STEM career to seek opportunities to learn and try new things as they uncover their passion and use it to grow their purpose.

Thank you, Dorinda, for being an encouragement to women and girls in STEM! The work you’re doing to break new ground for the organization is an inspiration to anyone interested in a STEM career.
